College life
We attend college for four purposes which are having academic training, cultivating taste and temperament, understanding human nature and thinking critically on our own.
In the first place, the important purpose of attending college is to have academic training. As students, our primary task is to acquire knowledge and have excellent academic marks. At college, we should grasp professional knowledge at least. With the help of professors and books, we can learn the knowledge more thoroughly and systematically. After that we need to acquire some necessary certificates and degrees which are very useful to pave the way for our future careers. Furthermore, we need to read more books to broaden our horizons. In my college, we need to learn by ourselves. Teachers just teach us some basic knowledge in class. If we want to learn more, we have to look some relevant books to open our eyes. In my college, at first, we should preview the textbooks before class begins. Sometimes, they will ask us to answer some questions at the beginning of class. If we don’t preview the texts in advance, they will be angry. But many of us still don’t preview the texts. Secondly, we listen to teachers’ speaking and take some notes in class. After class, we understand and recite these notes and finish homework. Then, we will leave book aside and review knowledge rarely instead of enjoying our fond things. Sometimes, some of us may borrow some books from library to open our eyes. Of course, it is without going that there are some students who are diligent and some students who are lazy. As for me, I’m the middle one. It is not enough for me to study well. In addition, the most important thing is that we apply our knowledge to practice, which is a kind of ability. We can’t only learn knowledge in college and become book worms. Sometimes, we can look for some part-time jobs to practice ourselves. We can also gain some knowledge and experience from jobs that we can’t get from class, which is beneficial to us. As for our ways to study, teachers tell us some but many students don’t insist on the means which teachers have said. We always study in our own ways. But the result is not well. My learning way is also of no avail, which makes me upset.
The second purpose is to cultivate taste and temperament. In my college, taste and temperament are related to behaviors of some teachers and students. In class, some teachers select some materials which reflect their tastes to some extent. What’s more, some students smoke after class. The smoke is full of the whole hall even in the classroom, which reflects a low taste. Some students throw litters here and there. Every morning, you can see many litters on the roads or classrooms on campus. The cleaners clean these litters in every early morning. Besides, some students’ money, laptops, kettles are stolen. We can know some students’ tastes and quality are so low. As for school authorities, they always want to earn some money from students. For example, the monthly electricity is limited and so little. We have to pay the charge of electricity beyond the offered electricity. What’s more, students take a mandarin examination for 200 RM. How expensive it is. The authorities must require training or students have no access to have the exam. The lovers don’t pay attention to their images; they hug or kiss each other on the roads. Giving these problems, we can see
how low the taste it is and we need to cultivate taste and temperament, which is a little profound purpose. As for students, we can take part in some useful activities or sports to cultivate our tastes. We will be more optimistic after entering activities. We can also read more learned, classic books of Chinese or English, or communicate with people who have high tastes, which are conducive to ourselves.
The third, we attend college to understand human nature or hearts. In college, we may have conflicts on our friends or strangers. What should we do? Do we need to have quarrels with them or keep ourselves calm to solve the problems? If we keep calm and communicate with each other, maybe the situation will change. If we want to understand human nature, we need to understand relationship among people. We’d better keep distance with our friends. Do not go so closely that they may hurt us. Everyone has free space. So we should be on the alert. If we know human nature in college, we would not have to waste our time learning how to handle human relationship after graduation.
The fourth, attending college is to think critically on our own. We should pay attention to our thoughts. It is widely acknowledged that we always admit other’s views instead of adhering to our own ideas. For example, school authority tells us some ideas which we always obey and take in. They say the college is beautiful and has a powerful management. But in fact, it isn’t a truth. There are some places where they haven’t well done. They don’t take students’ benefits fully into account. Some measures are not taken immediately and effective. So the college isn’t as well as we think. Besides, we rarely suspect some answers which others tell us and that are provided from some textbooks. We always believe that they are right. While they sometimes also make mistakes. So we should develop our suspicious thoughts and get into the habit of thinking critically on our own.
Given the four purposes, we can know that they are only too essential to us to improve ourselves. But as for me, I don’t realize the four purposes. With regard to study, my study is poor. Considering this problem, I think my primary knowledge is weak, which is the main reason. I should study more hard and be more flexible. Maybe there are some other minor reasons. For example, school atmosphere, teachers’ teaching, and the course arrangement and so on. School atmosphere is also important for us to study. If students are diligent in college, it has a great influence on surrounding students. What’s more, the course arrangement in this semester isn’t reasonable. Sometimes we have many courses in a day or a week. The relation to our specific levels is not match well. We are now seniors, we just begin learning written translation, but we learn oral interpretation at the same time, which is a great challenge for us to learn well. In addition, my taste isn’t high. I should read more useful books and avoid to be influenced by some negative things. I can’t understand human nature and I will pay more attention to this point in the future. I always follow other’s ideas. I will think questions in a critical way.
Compared with top universities, this college is smaller. The environment is less clean. Litters are here and there, some noises are produced by cars. The study atmosphere is weaker. The facilities aren’t complete and some are old. There are no electric fans, televisions, air-conditions in dormitory. In summer, we feel very hot. We
can only buy little electric fans to cool. There is no television; we can’t know the daily news. The teaching facilities are also few. Some chairs and computers in classrooms break, but school don’t ask professional people to mend immediately. In this college, the library is small. The books are few and some are old, which isn’t convenient for us to look up new information. The canteens are so few and small. We have run fast after class or we haven’t meals because canteens are crowded. Many students have complained this problem, but there is no response to us. The school has received much money from us but can’t give us adequate devices. On the contrary, the school spends much money on installing cameras in flats and classrooms. We think it isn’t very useful for us. The ways of learning are different between two kinds of colleges. In top universities, students have many discussions with teachers and students in class, and they intend to consider questions by themselves. They have many extracurricular classes or out-door classes. They emphasize practice and develop students’ creativity, so students are more flexible. While in my college students always stay at school to remember knowledge to pass exams. Besides, students in top universities are from different countries and they have different customs and cultural backgrounds. Students can exchange different ideas from each other. While in this college, students are mainly from Sichuan province. Then the school history of this college is short and is about ten years old. All in all, this college can’t compare with top universities on many aspects.
Finally, I hope that this college can pay more attention to cultivating students’ comprehensive quality, reducing the tuition from students, building canteens, improving the employment rate of graduates and the pass rate of college English test. There is very crowded in teaching buildings after class. It is high time that school built more passageways to solve this problem. What’s more, I expect that the college can learn some fine teaching management from top universities. I hope that school can find and make up for their defects, and can develop better and better.
