For many years scientists have said that the earth is getting warmer. Now they have found something new in hot cities! In the southern US, they have found that cities become very hot in summer. For example, the city of Atlanta in Georgia has rooftop(屋顶)temperatures of up to 50℃ while it is 27℃ in the streets! At night, the outside of building stay so hot that the heat of the city causes storms over the city!

China also has the same kind of problems. Every year more farming land is used for factories or offices. More housing is needed, too. As people become richer, they buy more cars. New roads are needed and new car parks are built in the city centers. This all makes the cities hotter.

It isn’t easy to change the situation. City planners say that we should have trees on both sides. Trees make the temperature lower, so we should have more trees in our parks and squares. We should also paint(涂油漆)our roofs white. If we do this, they do not become so hot. Every roof in a hot and sunny country should have solar roof panels(面板). The electricity from these can be used to run the air conditioners in the building.

People continue to cut down forests around the cities. This makes the problem worse. Cities are growing faster and faster. By the year 2015, four fifths of the population will be living in the cities. If we go on like this, there will not be enough farmland to feed everyone in the world. 36. The scientists have found _________.

A. there are not as many storms as before B. Atlanta is the hottest city in America C. it is not as hot in the street as it is on the roof D. buildings become very hot in the sun 37. The best way to make the city cooler is to ________. A. make fewer parks and squares B. try to use the air conditioners more C. paint the roofs of all the white buildings D. plant more trees 38. What will probably happen in the future according to the fourth paragraph? A. Most people will move to the countryside. B. People will plant more trees outside the cities. C. We will not have enough food.

D. The problem will get better, not worse.

39. The underlined “this” in the last paragraph refers to the fact that _________. A. new car parks are built in the city centers B. we should paint our roofs white

C. people continue to cut down forests around the cities

D. four fifths of the world’s population will live in cities by the year 2025 40. What is the best title of the passage? A. The Earth is Getting Warmer B. Most Farmland is Needed C. Scientists are worried about storm D. Cities are Warmer in Winter

A game like hockey must start in ancient Greece(希腊). Paintings that show a game using hockey sticks have been found from this time. Game much like hockey were also played by the Celts(凯尔特人)and native Americans.

The modern form of hockey began in the late 1800s. University students in Canada began forming teams and playing against each other. The first

official hockey game was held on March 3, 1875 in Montreal. Some students from McGill University in Montreal wrote up the rules for this game. The general rules of this game were taken from rugby.

In no time, the game grew to be the most popular sport among university students in Canada. All the excitement stirred up by hockey resulted in having Lord Stanley, who was Canada’s governor general from 1888 to 1893, offering a silver cup to the best college team each year. This silver cup late became the Stanly Cup, which is given to the best professional(专业的)hockey team each year.

Hockey became a professional sport in 1904. The first professional hockey organization, the International Ice Hockey Federation(联盟), began in 1908. Hockey also became an official(正式的)sport of the winter Olympics in 1920. When hockey has been played at the Olympics, Canada and Russia often have had the best teams.

The National Hockey League (NHL) is now made of 24 teams from Canada and the United States.
