Notice

Aimed to practise and improve our spoken English, an English discussion is to be held in the School Lecture Hall from 3 to 5 this Saturday afternoon.

We’re going to express our opinions on the differences between Chinese culture and western culture. Everyone is expected to deliver a speech within 3 minutes. Our foreign teacher Lucy will make comments on our performance and give us necessary guidance.

Please take advantage of this opportunity and make full preparations in advance. Besides, do come on time.

The English Club

读后续写: Paragraph 1:

Looking around, we saw a rubber boat floating by the shore. “How about going boating?” Mark asked. “Good idea.” So we three excitedly jumped onto the boat and rowed far out. I was thrilled to find so many fishes in the lake. Before I could say a word, Mark had cast the fishing net into the water. “Let’s wait and see.” Mark smiled mysteriously. “Look this way. Let me take a photo of you two.” Cody said, taking out the camera. Hearing that, I quickly approached Mark. But all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell into the water. Paragraph 2:

“Help! Help! Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help. However, none of us could swim. Mark and Cody tried to pull me up from the water but in vain. Struggling in the water, I was almost exhausted when I felt myself lifted by someone. It was Mark’s neighbor, who followed us there and saw what had happened. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and I was saved.

Text 2

M: Helen, will you please pick up Johnny from the kindergarten? I’m stuck in a traffic jam. W: That’s terrible, honey. But an injured miner has just arrived and it seems that I will have to operate on him at once. Text 3

W: Sorry, Mr. Thompson. I didn’t expect you to arrive so soon. Just a minute. Your room will be ready soon.

M: That’s OK. Just find a desk for me. You see, I have to sit down and finish my papers by noon. Text 4

W: It’s said that you’re leaving New York. Is that true? M: Yeah, I’m moving to Paris. I got a new job there. W: We’ll miss you. Text 5

M: Hello. This is Red Rose Restaurant. What can I do for you?

W: Oh, hello. I’d like to book a table for a party of six for Wednesday evening. M: All right. Party of six for Wednesday evening. May I have your name, please? Text 6

M: I’m now at the airport to meet Mr. Dale who is arriving at 3 pm. There will be some calls for me while I’m away, so please take a message. W: Certainly. What time will you be back?

M: Well, if the plane arrives on time, then I’ll be back around 5: 30 pm. W: If there’s some urgent business, how can I reach you? M: I’ll call in again, just to make sure. W: All right. Text 7

W: Excuse me. Is this seat taken?

M: No. it’s not taken. Did you just get on?

W: No, no. I just changed my seat. A man next to me was smoking, and smoke really bothers me. M: Let me help you with the suitcase. W: Oh, thank you.

M: Do you want to sit by the window? W: No, no, no. I like this seat better.

M: My name is Green... Laurence Green. Pleased to meet you. W: I’m Elizabeth Tobin. Pleased to meet you too. M: Do you live in New York?

W: No, I’m from Florida. I go to visit my sister. She moved several times before settling in New York. Text 8

W: Could you tell me how to borrow books in the library?

M: Sure. All you need is your student ID card to check out books and read. W: How many books am I allowed to check out at a time?

M: Two books at a time, except magazines. They have to be read within the library. W: How long can I keep the books?

第 2 页

M: For one month. If you can’t return the books in time, you’ll be fined. But if you renew them, you can keep them longer.

W: I see. Now I want to check out two books about spoken English. Can you show me where I can find them?

M: Yes, just over there to your right. W: Thank you very much. M: You’re welcome. Text 9

W: Excuse me. I need to get to Cambridge today. M: Would you like to go by train or by bus? W: I am not sure. Which one is better?

M: The bus is cheaper but also slower. It will take about two and a half hours. W: And how long does the train take?

M: If you take the fast train, it will take about 50 minutes. W: Where do I catch the train?

M: The trains for Cambridge leave from King’s Cross Station. They run every half-hour. Most trains to Cambridge go from Platform 9. W: How do I get to King’s Cross Station?

M: The best way is to take an underground train directly to King’s Cross Station. The underground station is just round the corner from here. W: Can you show me on the map?

M: Just turn right when you leave and then turn right again at the first crossroads. The entrance to the underground station is about 50 meters further on. M: Thank you very much. Text 10

M: I attend English classes at a language program in my city because I want to improve my communication skills. English has become the international language around the world, and I might be able to get better employment and make more friends if I can speak English fluently. I take four classes a day that all focus on different language skills including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar. I think that some people have a natural ability to pick up a language and master it, but I don’t think I fit that group. Actually, learning to speak English well requires a great amount of effort, patience and practice. Too often, students speak English in their classes, but they go back to their native language after school ends. In fact, if you want to adjust to a new culture, you should make it a point to study, review, and practice everything you are studying. Otherwise, you will never learn and fit into any group.
