M: Honey, what do you think of this kind of wooden chair for our restaurant?
W: It looks great, but it’s kind of small, just like the chairs in my company. How about this
green one here? (Text 2)
W: Let’s get something to drink and then go and see the elephants.
M: But the dolphin show starts in two minutes. I really want to see that. We can get a cup of tea
afterwards. (Text 3)
W: Can you hand me four eggs, please? M: Sure. Do you need anything else?
W: Yes, please. I need some sugar and chocolate. Now everything is ready for my super chocolate pie. (Text 4)
M: You look upset. What’s wrong?
W: I’ll never take my car downtown again.
M: Did you get another ticket or couldn’t you find a parking space? W: I wish it were just that. My car was broken into. I lost my purse. (Text 5)
W: Excuse me, sir. Could you tell me how I can get to the city church? M: Are you driving or taking public transportation?
W: Well, I spent the whole day yesterday driving to see all the sights, so today I think I’d like to
go by bus.
M: Why don’t you walk with me? I’m heading in the direction where you can catch the first bus
you’ll need to take. (Text 6)
W: Good morning. I’m calling about the job advertisement in the paper yesterday. M: Ah, yes. Could you tell me a little about yourself?
W: Yes. I’ve been working in India as a secretary. Previous to that, I was at the University of
Manchester. I’ve got a degree in English.
M: I see, and how do you see yourself developing in this job?
W: Well, I do hope that my career as a secretary will lead me eventually into management. M: I think the best thing for you to do is send in a written reply to the advertisement. W: Oh, I see.
M: When we receive your application, we will arrange an interview for you. (Text 7)
M: Hey, neighbor. I’m going out of town this weekend, and I was wondering if you could take
care of my dog while I’m gone. You know my dog, Jaws, don’t you? W: Yeah.
M: Just feed him a can of dog food a day, and make sure he has plenty of water in his dish. Oh,
and he needs someone to take him for a walk around the block every afternoon. W: Well, how about if I just throw a ball over the fence to give him some exercise?
M: No, he really needs a walk. Ah, and he likes to watch the 3:00 soap opera on Channel 4 and
then you’ll need to brush his teeth after you give him doggie treats at 4:00.
W: You must be out of your mind if you think I’m going to watch your dog. I wouldn’t watch
that dog even if you paid me. (Text 8)
W: Good morning. This is Jenny speaking. What can I do for you?
M: Hi. I am calling to complain about the mobile phone I bought from you last Sunday. The
model is Samsung Galaxy 3818. I cannot receive any incoming calls. It always gives callers a busy signal. Do you know what the problem could be? W: Can you send any short messages? M: Yes. I can also call other people.
W: Could you please tell me how long this has been happening?
M: Since this Tuesday — the day before yesterday. You know, initially I thought it was the
mobile’s problem but then I realized it might be caused by the signal. W: Do you still have your receipt?
M: I have it at home, but I don’t have it with me at the moment.
W: Could you please read the serial number of your mobile phone to me? I can check whether
there is a problem with the mobile phone itself. The sequence should begin with 08381. M: Just a minute. Let me see … yes, 08381823923.
W: Sir, I have checked your mobile’s status and everything is fine. I see a note here by our
engineer that there are problems with receiving calls due to the upgrading of our network and it looks like your number could have been one of those affected. Our apologies for any inconvenience we’ve caused you. (Text 9)
M: Good morning.
W: Good morning. Um ... I’m looking for a place to rent near the university. There are three of
us looking together. We thought we might share if we could find something suitable. M: So something near the university?
W: Yes, if that’s at all possible. We are all students so it’d be good if we could find something
within walking distance. M: Are you in your first year?
W: No, I’ve been here a year already.
M: So let me have a look at what we’ve got ... Well, there’s a two-bedroom house in Newtown
which is quite cheap.
W: Well, I like that it’s very near the university, but if we all want our own rooms, it isn’t really
1
big enough.
M: Too small. Give that one a miss? W: Yeah, I think so. Got anything else?
M: What about this? Three-bedroom flat, close to the university ... It’s $400 a week. W: Oh, that’s too expensive.
M: Well, here’s a three-bedroom house with a small garden. It’s near the airport, miles from the
university, but it’s reasonably priced at $240 a week. Why don’t you go and have a look? W: All right. (Text 10) M
And now here’s news about our latest competition. You won’t believe what we’re offering you this month. As this is International Year of the Family, you have the chance to win a wonderful family holiday in Jamaica. All you have to do is take a photograph which shows family life. It could be the children with their parents or their grandparents or whatever you wish. You don’t have to have taken it on holiday of course. Now, the lucky winner has the chance to spend two weeks at Silver Sands Bay in Jamaica. Two weeks of beautiful beaches, sunshine, plenty for everyone to do. There are water sports and children’s entertainment, and everything is included. That’s everything — food as well. Now, the second prize is a camera worth £500, and that’s certainly worth having for any holidays coming up. So send us your photograph — in color or black and white — by 31 August — that’s the closing date for entries … and listen to this program to hear if you’ve won or not. We will be announcing the winners on 15 September. Now, you must be over 18 years of age. I’m sorry kids, but you’ll have a chance next month in your super sports competition! Send your lucky photograph to us at DCM Radio, 25 East Hill, Brighton, Sussex. And don’t forget to write your name and address on the back of the photo. We can’t return any photos, I’m afraid, so make sure you’ve got another copy if it’s your favorite.

Recently, our school is planning to offer us a cooking course, to which students have different attitudes.
In my opinion, the cooking course can be beneficial and enjoyable. By attending it, we can learn a very useful living skill to help ourselves not only live independently but also take care of our families. Besides, taking this course is a way to reduce our study stress and enrich our school life.
To make this course a great success, I think it’s important to tell students how to cook safely to avoid getting hurt while practicing cooking.
All in all, the idea is creative and I can hardly wait to attend it!
