Should a city try to preserve its old, historic buildings or destroy them and replace them with modern buildings? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. Old and historic buildings might have special significance for the nation's civilization. In my opinion, it could not be an advisable plan to establish modern buildings at the expense of old and historic buildings. To the contrary, the location of modern buildings should avoid the potential demolishment of old building with historic values. In other words, a government should put preserving old, historic buildings on the board as a prerequisite, when they decide to start new buildings.
Some may point out that old, historic buildings are precarious and even dangerous for living. It may be the case. Long-term's erosion from wind and chemical render many antique buildings become lusterless and obsolete. So, as a result, they could be obstacles on achieving the consummation of a city's appearance.
However, to some extent, old and historic buildings ought to possess special historical and cultural significances. For example, Pyramids in Egypt and South America have existed for over thousands years, but the local government will not decide to pull down them to build a
new city over there, due to the grand meaning of their historic and culture. Great Wall in North China is bound to be preserved carefully because it is also one of the Seven Tremendous Miracles of the world. Obviously, it is the common sense that such antique buildings should not be destroyed.
Some special buildings in a city which witness the progress of the city should not be destroyed or replaced by other modern buildings. One example in this case is German Cologne Cathedral. It locates in Cologne, Germany. Although it is old and lusterless, because of its religion significance, no one ever vote to replace it or destroy it. In my opinion, every city should more or less has some antique buildings which can behalf or exhibit the city's history. Considering these buildings which hold special meanings, they will definitely be protected instead of being sabotaged.
With regard to other minor antique buildings, even if they may have less significance than large-scale buildings like Cologne Cathedral, we also should protect it or renovate it at least, because destroying an old buildings might means the disavowal of our own culture. In my point of view, I assume that modern buildings' design and construction should follow the sustainable and green-low-waste criteria. Every new building's setting up must base local topography and environment conditions. Replacing an old building sometimes is not necessary.
I must mention that in some cities, there are some illegal obsolete buildings and precarious old shelters. In this case, governments must end them.
To sum up, antique buildings with historic significance should be preserved, and other old buildings which lose their functions should be renovated by modern methods.
