Zhou Ping: Hi, Sam, I’ve been trying to write my diary in English. Could you kindly read some and
help me improve them?
Sam: Keeping a diary is a good idea. It enables you to use English regularly. But are you sure that
I read all your secrets? How about just showing me the less secret parts?
Zhou Ping: Never mind! It’s all about my college life, and there’s nothing so confidential.
Sam: OK, I see. Have you tried doing it all the same time every day? Then you won’t forget to
do it.
Zhou Ping: That’s right. I really try to write them before I go to bed everyday.
Sam: I notice here on the third page that you tried to write a poem in English. What about trying
some more? This one is pretty good.
Zhou Ping: Yes, and you’re the first person who’s seen it. It’s my only poem and I haven’t shown to
my boyfriend or roommates because I’m afraid that they may laugh at me.
Sam: Practice makes perfect. If you write more poems, please show them to me. I’ve written
some poetries too, and I’d like to see other poems you write.
Zhou Ping: What’s your poetry about?
Sam: Guess! Task 2:
Peng: Did you enjoy the movie of “The Lord of The Ring” that we saw last Saturday? Sue: Sure. It’s really outstanding. And Orlando Bloom is my favorite.
Peng: I agree that he’s so cool. But it’s hard to understand his American partner when they talked so
fast. I’m at my wit’s end trying to follow him.
Sue: That’s true. But many Americans do talk fast and you have to get used to it. There’s no shortcut
to success.
Peng: Which kind of movie should I watch, the movie with Chinese subtitles or not?
Sue: I think you should cover the subtitles up, and try to figure the words out from the context. Peng: When I listen to recorded music, should I look at the words that come with the tape?
Sue: I think you should try to listen without the printed lyrics at first. Then listen again with the words
to check out. That will do more help. Peng: That’s an excellent idea. I’ll give it a try.
